Jail support

| wiki home | 1 min

Always a work in progress. I am not an expert.

Some things to think about:

  • How people sign up to do it
  • What people should bring (rain gear, notebook, pen, charged phone, cash)
  • How you will collect people’s belongings and keep them straight (tape on phone with name, everything else in ziploc with it)
  • How you will find out where people are taken (in NYC, calling 311 and calling precincts, or asking police at the vans)
  • How you will keep track of who is arrested, and their time of arrest
  • How you will collect info on the arrestees (legal name, DOB, contact info - ideally some or all of this can be collected in advance) and their arrest and charge(s) and court dates (desk appearance ticket (DAT) photo? scan? where is it saved, and how is it communicated to legal?)
  • Taking photos of injuries

Some things jail support might want to have:

  • Food (or at least snacks) and water
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Chargers/cords for phones
  • Metrocards
  • Info on how legal support will reach out
  • Info on what to do if they can’t make their court date
